Afonso Ferreira
Biography
Afonso Ferreira is currently in charge, amongst others, of the general secretariat of the Working Group on “Secure ICT Research and Innovation” of the European Network and Information Security Platform, which provides the input for Horizon 2020 Work-Programmes in Digital Security, and is leading the planning and financing of cybersecurity activities through the Connecting Europe Facility programmes. He is seconded as a French expert to the European Commission, working now as policy officer at the Trust and Security unit of the DG CONNECT, since 2011. Other assignments included the Future and Emerging Technologies unit and the Digital Futures task force. Dr Ferreira is Directeur de Recherche with the French CNRS and was the Scientific Coordinator for International Affairs of the CNRS Institute for Computer Sciences INS2I, in 2010-2011, also conducting scientific work with the INRIA. He has over thirty years of experience in the area of Communication Networks, High Performance Computing, and Algorithms, having published more than 100 papers in the forefront of scientific research. He has been member of more than 60 Technical Program Committees for international events and is currently an editorial board member for international scientific journals. Dr Ferreira has also been member of Technical Committees of international organisations and was at the origin of several European projects since FP3. From 2007 to 2010 Dr Ferreira acted as the Head of Science Operations at the Brussels office of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), an intergovernmental initiative for spanning 36 countries, where he oversaw all aspects related to COST’s more than 200 European-wide multi-disciplinary projects. In addition to his in-depth knowledge of European Union policies and programmes, Dr Ferreira specialises in Cybersecurity, Foresight, Innovation Policy, and on the impact of the Digital Revolution on growth and jobs.
