BIRDS OF A FEATHER SESSION:
Title: Internet of Things in Retail Supply Chains – future, impact and new business models
Scope: Retail and Supply Chain are listed as key areas when the Internet of Things (IoT) can be implemented. Already we can observe RFID in the stores and increased use of in-store technologies and mobile devices. This trend will likely increase as new model is emerging – omnichannel retailing (see: Piotrowicz & Cuthbertson 2014), when two sale channels; online and traditional, in-store, are merged into single one. However, such linkage is not without challenges, it requires the redesign of the supply chain and distribution (such as joint inventory and returns management), incorporation of mobile devices into the store networks (including devices used by customers), changes in the corporate structure, consideration of security and privacy issues. There is also the question about the role of physical stores: what role they will play, how technologies such as sensors, virtual reality and context-aware devices will be used and for what purposes? While there is a clear trend of incorporating IoT into the retail supply chain, including links to “smart city” and “smart home” concepts, there are open questions of how technology will change retail channels, business models, distribution systems, marketing, communication and customer requirements – such topics will be discussed during the session.
